The Art of Being Alone

I am alone but not lonely.

One thing I’ve always enjoyed is my alone time. The time I get to step away from everyone and everything and do whatever I want are the moments I live for.
At one point in my life, I enjoyed doing everything alone, a little too much. I went to the movies alone, went shopping alone, went to Disneyland alone, eating at a restaurant alone. That last one I only did it once as it was a little awkward but I am down to try it again.
Having the ability to enjoy one’s own company is not an ability everyone possesses, I’ve learned this mainly by telling people about the activities I have done, and when they ask “who did you go with” I say no one, they look of confusion and surprise is never missing.
I realize not everyone can do this, but have they ever tried? You don’t have to go straight for the solo Disney trip, but maybe something small. Just go to a coffee shop alone or even just go to a store alone.

Sometimes when you’re around people, even if you’re close to them, you’ll find that you’re kind of “putting on”. Whether this is putting on a persona, putting on a smile, or even just putting on clothes you don’t wanna wear but just put on to impress. If you’re by yourself and just enjoying your own company, there is no one you’ll have to impress. You’ll actually find that your confidence will increase as you’re not seeking validation from others less.
I do fear that sometimes trying to assimilate back into society with friends will be hard as I enjoy being alone too much, but life’s all about balance. Let’s promise each other this: if you try and enjoy an activity by yourself, I’ll remember to text my friends back to hang out. Deal?
